Alex Singer: An AMIIE Hero

On December 19, 2005 a special memorial was hung in the classroom building of AMIIE honoring Alex Singer, a brave soldier who was killed in an ambush while trying to save his commanding officer in south Lebanon on September 15, 1987. As many of our alumni know well, AMIIE has a special connection to Alex and to his family.

After his death, Alex Singer's family published a compilation of Alex's letters, poems, drawings, and parts of his thesis entitled: Alex - Building a Life: The Story of an American Who Fell Defending Israel. For many years now, I have been using the story of Alex Singer to help inspire my high school students. I show the video and tell his story in class and then we visit the area near Mount Hermon where he was killed. We read Alex's letters and we are touched by his wisdom and love for Israel.

On the final day of our studies we visit his grave at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem and I think all of our students feel that they are beside the grave of not only an inspiring hero, but a dear friend as well. As a teacher, I have found Alex's letters help me teach several important Jewish values, among them:
Love of Family
Love of Judaism
Love of Israel
Defending the Jewish State and the Jewish people
and making Tikun Olam an integral part of one's life.

Alex's life and words have touched so many of my students over the years, and he is a true inspiration to so many of us. I feel privileged as an educator to share his story with my students. Several times Alex's parents, Suzanne and Max, have honored us by coming to campus to speak to our students. Last month I met with Suzanne in Jerusalem and she and her husband donated to AMHSI copies of several of Alex's prints and drawings along with a generous donation to make a memorial for our classroom building. This memorial added much character to our classroom building and hopefully will inspire thousands of young Jewish students with Alex's ideals and values.

May we always be inspired to greater Jewish commitment by the heroic deeds of our ancient ancestors as well as of our modern-day Israeli heroes like Alex. I invite you to visit our campus and see the Alex Memorial in person.
