AMHSI Student letter from Summer 2008 group
July 4, 2008
"I wish I could explain better the effect this program has on us all, but it's truly an indescribable feeling. Everything else pales in comparison and there's nothing in the world any of us would rather be doing. I never would have thought it possible for a group of people to become as close as we have as fast as we have. By the third day we were best friends. We share everything. It gets to a point when if anything happens that you want to tell your friends, you're literally going from room to room to tell everyone. The word family is so true here.
...As for the program itself, I learned more about my people and the history of this country in the first week then I have my entire life. To learn something in the classroom and then to be taken and to continue learning on the site of the occurrence is just amazing, for lack of a better word. The best so far was Hezzekiah's Water Tunnel. It's pitch black in there, your eyes might as well be closed for all you can see. We were allowed to have flashlights but we all decided we didn't want them. It's pitch black and there are turns and bumps and sometimes you can hit your head because you should have ducked or you might bump into a huge rock but it never happened. True, you can't see anything; but you have the hand of the person in front of you. When there's a turn you announce it so the people behind you are aware, when it gets slippery you tell everyone. All you have is the hand of the person in front of you, and that's truly all you need. That was one of the best experiences of my life."
