$30,000 secured so far for The summer of 2007 marked the first anniversary of the death of former AMHSI student and dear friend, Michael Levin, who fell heroically in battle last summer during Israel's war with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Michael came to AMHSI in February 2001. He learned the 4,000 year history of the Jewish people and was inspired to help build and secure Israel's future. Michael felt an obligation to defend Israel and dreamed of serving in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Two years after attending AMHSI, Michael made Aliyah (moved to Israel) and joined the elite Israeli Paratroopers, earning the coveted red beret of Israel's finest warriors.
When war broke out in Lebanon in the summer of 2006, Michael was visiting his family in Philadelphia. As soon as Michael heard about the Hezbollah attacks, he rushed back to Israel and voluntarily joined his unit in battle. On August 1, 2006, Michael was killed in battle, serving for the country he'd grown to love.
Michael was an outstanding student and a proud Jew - an inspiration to all. He took the greatest steps in realizing his dreams and fighting for a cause he believed in for the betterment of his People. His selfless and courageous acts are nothing short of legendary.
To commemorate the one year anniversary since Michael's heroic death, AMHSI has established the Michael Levin Scholarship Fund in order to keep Michael's dreams alive and to pass on his legacy to future generations, giving young Jewish Americans a chance to experience Israel through education, experience and understanding.
